Le Bernardin Wins The Opening Round Of The Al Maktoum Challenge

Already a very impressive winner of the listed Dubai Creek Mile last December, Le Bernardin (Bernardini x La Rosa) lived up to the expectation as he followed up his listed win with a victory in the first round of the Al Maktoom Challenge 2016.
Adopting his customary style of running; the seven year old son of Bernardini raced with the speed and showed lots of guts to repel off challenges down the straight, scoring a very courageous win in the process. Extremely fast out of the gates, Le Bernardin was always prominent and by the 500m mark he did put clear daylight between him and the rest. While it seemed he would win going away, he paddled in dying meters of the race as the numerous challenges came looming. Layl – 2nd ( Street Cry x Cymbal) and the Zayat owned Prayer for Relief – 3rd ( Jump Start x Sparklin Lil) really got going late but the line just came at the right time for Le Bernardin. Faulkner came fourth while last year’s winner Surfer finished in a shade disappointing 5th.
Bred by Mike G Rutherford, he was $325,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate by Bernardini out of La Rosa by Wild Again. A half sister to the smart Pennsylvania Oaks winner Taittinger Rose, he hails from the family of Gr1 Breeders’ Cup juvenile Fillies winner and Santa Anita Oaks runner up Twilight Ridge.
A former Kiaran Mclaughlin trained Gr3 winner in the U.S., Le Bernardin has just scored his 7th career wins in 16 starts earning so far around half a million dollars in prize money. His next start looks to be during Super Saturday, while the Godolphin Mile is his long term target for the carnival.
