‘THE NEXT HENRY’

Monaco starlet Kylian Mbappe is constantly being compared to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and rightly so they should. At just 18 years of age the silky forward has taken European football by storm; leaving defenders on skates as he glides across the grass. Nevertheless, what really make this talented frenchman so special?

Kylian Mbappé is the 18-year old French footballer who plays as a striker or winger for AS Monaco in Ligue 1. It was only a couple years ago we witnessed Monaco sell another budding star to Manchester United in Anthony Martial so what remains the highest amount paid for a teenage, however, many feel in light of the recent performances of Kylian Mbappe we could see those figures broken.

He has been at the Cote d’Azur club since 2015, after graduating from the famed Clairefontaine academy. Although he featured sparsely in 2015-16 – breaking Thierry Henry’s youngest debutant and goalscorer record – the latter part of 2016-17 has seen him become an integral part of the free-scoring Monaco side.

He has featured in 29 games across all competitions, scoring 15 goals and assisting 10 times in the process. The young vibrant Monaco side sits atop Ligue 1 at the moment above PSG and Mbappé has been a key part of this position. His speed, calm finishing and link up play with fellow attackers like Radamel Falcao, Thomas Lemar and Bernardo Silva has been a revelation of sorts. Mostly played as a left-sided attacker or a striker alongside Falcao, his eye-catching performances have caught the eye of the big clubs across Europe.

Not only this, he almost single-handedly won the French Under 19 team the Under 19 European Championship. It looks to be only a matter of time before he gets called up to the rapidly brimming with young talent senior squad.
