Dutch Legend Johan Cruyff Dies Of Cancer At 68

Dutch footballing legend Johan Cruyff has died at the age of 68 after battling lung cancer for a long time. The three-time Ballon d’Or winner’s family released a statement earlier today that read: “On March 24 2016, Johan Cruyff (68) died peacefully in Barcelona, surrounded by his family after a hard fought battle with cancer.

“It’s with great sadness that we ask you to respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

Cruyff is regarded has one of the greatest players of all time with a very successful career as player, and also as coach.

As a player he won the European Cup with Ajax three times consecutively and reached the final of the 1974 FIFA World Cup with the Netherlands team but they lost 2-1 to West Germany.

As a manager he won the European Cup again with Barcelona in 1992, but it was the Spanish club’s first. He later went on to win four La Liga titles from 1990/91 to 1993/94 seasons.

Cruyff was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2015 and he gave up smoking immediately after the operation.
