USA Today’s Sam Amick reported earlier (deal has been officially confirmed since) that the Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired forward Channing Frye from the Orlando Magic in a three-team deal. The Cavaliers will look to use Frye as a player that can stretch the floor with the abilities to shoot the three, as well as rebound the ball. This season Frye is averaging 5.2 points and 3.2 rebounds, having started in 29 games. He is also shot 39.7 percent from the three point line.
The Cavaliers in return have sent center Anderson Varejao to the Portland Trailblazers, in which the Blazers are adding more depth to their young, big men core that include Mason Plumee, Myers Leonard, Ed Davis and Noah Vonleh. Varejao has played his entire 12 seasons with the Cavaliers and has averaged 7.6 points and 7.5 rebounds over his career. Varejao will now look to play a veteran leadership role in a Trailblazers team fighting for a playoff spot in the Western Conference alongside teams like Utah Jazz and Sacramento Kings.
The Orlando Magic will acquire Jared Cunningham from the Cavs as an expiring contract, but will likely be waived. Portland will also get a 2018 first round pick from the Cleveland Cavaliers in this deal.
On Tuesday Orlando traded forward Tobias Harris to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Ersan Ilysova and Brandon Jennings. For the Cavaliers, adding Frye’s $8.2 million salary can allow them to add a top role player as they are reportedly looking to pursue sharpshooters such as Ryan Anderson and Kyle Korver. The NBA Trade deadline will go on today until 3pm Eastern.
By moving C. Frye to CLE, the Magic can make procedural moves (renouncing cap holds) to have $45 million in cap space for July.
