Week 16 had a lot of upsets and while the playoff picture is clearer in some places, others are just as murky heading into the final week of the NFL regular season.
Here is some notable results:
REDSKINS CLINCH NFC EAST
The Washington Redskins clinched the NFC East with their victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night, locking themselves in as the No. 4 seed and a first round date with a Wildcard team. While the NFC East crown is not exactly a shining achievement this year, Washington has distanced itself as a cut above the other teams in it, perhaps even as a viable playoff team. Red hot Kirk Cousins has played himself into a potentially lucrative off-season, and could build on that with a win against some suddenly struggling potential opponents in Seattle and Green Bay.
We bet he likes that.
JETS WIN, LEAPFROG STUMBLING STEELERS
The New York Jets pulled off an impressive win against the New England Patriots on Sunday, winning 26-20 in overtime after the Patriots elected to kick after winning the toss in overtime. It’s an important win not only because it came at the expense of their hated rival and the No. 1 seed in the AFC, but also because it puts them ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who fell flat on the road against the lowly Baltimore Ravens. If the Jets can beat the Bills on Sunday, they’re in the playoffs.
CAROLINA UPSET BY FALCONS
Cue the mocking dabbing that was inevitable when the Panthers finally lost. The Atlanta Falcons withstood some early Carolina scoring, found wide receiver Julio Jones on a deep ball into double coverage, and made some big stops down the stretch to knock off the undefeated Panthers and keep their slim playoff hopes alive for a few more hours (until the Vikings won later that night, eliminating them). Carolina now finds itself in a position where it could lose the No. 1 seed should they lose versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Arizona Cardinals (coming off a thrashing of the Green Bay Packers) beat the Seattle Seahawks, who saw their own winning streak snapped by the St. Louis Rams.
