Seahawks Soaring: Seattle Takes Control of Wildcard Race.

MINNESOTA — The Seattle Seahawks sandbagged the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in a 38-7 laugher. The vaunted Seattle defense, missing for large parts of the season, finally showed up yesterday holding Vikings’ star running back Adrian Peterson to just 18 yards and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to 118 yards passing with an interception and no touchdowns. Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson tossed three touchdowns and ran another in (his first rushing touchdown of the year) as the Seattle offense also got back on track, this despite losing tight end Jimmy Graham to a torn patellar tendon last week. The Seahawks offense looked dangerous once again, with rookie running back Thomas Rawls continuing to fill in admirably for the injured Marshawn Lynch with over a hundred yards rushing and yet another touchdown.

The win moved the Seahwaks to 7-5 on the year, in sole possession of the second wildcard in the NFC and just one game behind the Vikings for the top wildcard spot. After starting the season 2-4, the Seahawks have rattled off wins in 5 of their last six, with their lone loss in that stretch coming in a 39-32 thriller against the NFC West leading Cardinals. The streak is reminiscent of last year’s run to the Superbowl, when a 3-3 Seahawks team figured things out and rode that momentum all the way to the postseason and eventual Superbowl defeat.

The Carolina Panthers stayed perfect and clinched the NFC South thanks to Cam Newton‘s 5 touchdown passes against the Saints, holding them off 41-38. The game featured the first blocked extra point returned for 2 points since the NFL rule changed this offseason.

The Patriots lost their second straight game due in large part to a barrage of touchdowns on defense and special teams by the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s the first time the Patriots have lost two games in a row since the 2012 season.

The Atlanta Falcons fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-19, sweeping the season series and putting a serious damper on any hopes the Falcons had of making the playoffs, who find themselves 6-6 after starting the season 5-0. Tampa Bay also moved to 6-6, one game out of the second wild card spot.
