Manchester United’s Luke Shaw undergoes second operation

The 20-year-old will now embark on his long road to recovery as he bids to be fit in time for next summer’s European Championship

Luke Shaw has arrived back in Manchester after spending the last four nights in a Dutch hospital.

The Manchester United defender’s teammates flew home after their defeat to PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday but he stayed for further treatment on his broken leg.

Shaw, 20, underwent a second surgery on Friday to close the wound on his right leg and was subsequently given the all-clear to fly back to England.

The young England defender took to Instagram on Saturday morning to thank hospital staff for the treatment he received this week.

He wrote: “I just wanna say a massive thank you to everyone at St Anna hospital for all the care and attention they have given me the last few days. Something I will never forget!

The United left-back broke his right leg in two places after a two-footed challenge from PSV Eindhoven centre-half Hector Moreno on Tuesday.

The incident came 15 minutes into the 20-year-old’s debut in the Champions League and faces six months on the sidelines.

Shaw was operated on in Eindhoven that night, and now a picture of his post-surgery leg has surfaced after he allegedly uploaded it on Snapchat and Instagram.

Following the game, Shaw tweeted: “Thank you everyone for your messages, words can’t describe how gutted I am, my road to recovery starts now, I will come back stronger.”

While United revealed yesterday: “Luke Shaw underwent surgery on his injury on Tuesday night and will remain in hospital in Eindhoven to continue his early recovery.

“Manchester United are grateful for the excellent care he is receiving and would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of support.”

Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal believes it’s a huge blow for his side after Shaw’s impressive start to the campaign.

“It is a double fracture,” the Dutchman said. “It is very bad and sad for him, but also for our team.

“It is awful. He’s a boy who came to Manchester as an 18-year-old, had a very difficult season, then second season he plays fantastic, and then this happens.”

Van Gaal must now choose one of Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young to deputise at left-back in Shaw’s absence.

“For us it is a big loss, because I said in advance it shall be the season of Luke Shaw, and now it is nearly finished already,” Van Gaal said.

“We built up a left wing with Memphis Depay and Luke, and now we must build it up again because we have to address that situation.

“It’s not easy, we have to cope with it, but it is a big loss. Shaw is the line-up player and it is very difficult to replace him, certainly when he is such good shape.

“But we have, in Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Ashley Young, good replacements.”

Shaw has started all eight of Manchester United’s matches this season.
