The Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons played the first “Monday Night Football” game of the season. Cody Parkey missed a 44-yard field goal for Philadelphia and Atlanta held on for the win.
he Falcons established the tone on both sides of the ball in the early goings, jumping out to a 20-3 lead thanks to a Sam Bradford interception just before halftime. The new Eagles quarterback eventually settled down, going 36-for-52 with 336 yards.
The Philadelphia offense eventually got going and took the lead at 24-23 midway through the fourth, but the defense couldn’t hold firm, allowing a 44-yard catch by Julio Jones to get the Falcons in position for a game-winning field goal. The Eagles had a chance from 47 yards out to re-take the lead that Cody Parkey pushed wide right.
This unpredictable affair brought plenty of positives and negatives for both the Falcons and Eagles that resonate well past the final score. Take a look below for a running tally of the game.
This game was a combination of promising and painstaking in a number of ways for each team.
Recurring issues from last season cropped up for the Eagles and Falcons, respectively. An inability to contain strong passing attacks plagued Philadelphia again, allowing a 141-yard, two-touchdown game from Julio Jones and 84 yards from Roddy White. For Atlanta, its offensive line had some ugly moments and the defense struggled late—both reminiscent of 2014.
But it’s impossible not to come away excited for Week 2 on either side. Bradford and the Eagles offense clicked in a big way after early adversity, and the Falcons should be favorites in the NFC South if that defensive edge continues.
