UFC 191: The Recap

UFC 191 is in the books and despite some slow moments the event provided entertaining fights in the end.

Here’s what happened on the main card:

In the main event Demetrious Johnson put any doubts about his dominance to rest, as he beat John Dodson in every facet of the game for a unanimous decision win.  Dodson had his moments in the first two rounds, but after that he looked frustrated and confused. Johnson constantly pressured him with strikes and take down attempts, never giving him a moment to breathe. Johnson was particularly effective in transitions, landing a variety of hard strikes while attempting to take down Dodson.

Andrei Arlovski won a three-round unanimous decision against Frank Mir in the co-main event.  Surprisingly, neither fighter was able to get much going to the disappointment of many fans. Arlovski relied too much on his right hand while Mir didn’t get this timing down until the second round.  However, for all Mir’s defense, he rarely looked to counter and his only significant offense was some ground strikes after a take down in the second round. Arlovski was the more active fighter, and his persistence paid off as he landed enough powerful punches to cut Mir and take the decision.

Anthony Johnson dominated Jimi Manuwa finishing the fight by knockout in the second round. After a first round that saw Johnson score both a knock down and a take down, he followed it up in round two with a left body kick-right hand combo, the latter which connected clean on Manuwa’s jaw and knocked him on the ground. From there Johnson finished him off with ground and pound.

Jan Blachowicz had a strong first round against Corey Anderson, where he landed numerous hard punches and kicks. He visibly tired after that as Anderson seized the advantage and took him down repeatedly. Anderson then dropped heavy strikes from Blachowicz’ guard and half guard on his way to a one-sided unanimous decision.

Paige VanZant controlled her fight against Alex Chambers with constant pressure and effective striking from the Thai clinch.  After winning the first two rounds, VanZant finished the fight in the third with an armbar.
