Roger Federer of Switzerland will face top seed and world number on Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the championship round of the 2015 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in the United States. Djokovic dominated Andy Murray of United Kingdom in straight sets, 6-3 6-2 while Federer beat Milos Raonic of Canada also in just two but close sets, 7-5 6-4 in their semi-final matches. The meeting on Sunday will be the 38th head-to-head match-up between two of the worlds’ most popular tennis players and currently the best in the men’s tour. Djokovic is ranked world no. 1 while Federer is ranked no. 2.
“I think it’s very exciting for both of us, and also for fans, to see a rematch of the great final from last year,” Federer, who was defeated in three sets 3-6 6-3 7-6(3) in last season’s final, said in the tournament’s official website. “I’m looking forward to it, and I hope I can keep up my good play.”
Federer holds the edge in their all-time match-up, 20-17 and has won their most recent match-up. Federer defeated Djokovic, 6-3 7-5 in the final of the 2015 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships last February. Both players had three wins in six meetings in the 2014 season with Djokovic winning the bigger tournament matches at the Wimbledon final in five sets, 6-7(7) 6-4 7-6(4) 5-7 6-4 and a walkover at the 2014 World Tour Finals.
”It doesn’t play a decisive role on how I’m going to approach the match, but it does motivate me,” Djokovic said about his match-up with Federer and a chance to make history at Indian Wells also in the official website. “It does give me this positive wind in the back that I can maybe use and manifest on the court.”
Djokovic is aiming for back-to-back titles at Indian Wells the first since Federer did it from 2004 to 2006. The Federer-Djokovic final is set to start on March 23, 2015 at 6AM AEST or Monday morning in Australia.
